ADR 0001 — Name: Manthan
Status: Accepted
Date: 2026-05-05
Context
The platform needed a name signifying learning and expansion. Initial proposal Vistara (Sanskrit "expansion") collided with the Indian airline brand. Several alternatives surveyed across Sanskrit, Greek, Latin, Arabic, Persian.
Decision
Manthan (Sanskrit मंथन, "churning").
Consequences
- The name carries the operating principle in one word. Samudra Manthan — gods and demons churning the ocean of milk for amrita — maps directly onto the noise-as-substrate model: poison surfaces first, gems emerge, the rare nectar comes late, you keep churning.
- Repo:
manthan/. Python packages:manthan_substrate,manthan_runtime,manthan_api,manthan_common. - Brand collision check: no commercial product I'm aware of currently named Manthan in the agent / dev tools space (it appears as a 2009 Indian film and as a metaphor in business literature, neither of which collides).
Alternatives considered
- Vistara — Sanskrit "expansion." Rejected: airline brand collision.
- Hikma — Arabic "wisdom." Strong contender; rejected because Manthan encodes the process (churning) rather than the outcome (wisdom), which fits the noise-as-substrate principle better.
- Khoj — Hindi/Urdu "discovery." Sharp and short, but action-flavoured (search/quest); Manthan better captures the slow co-emergence model.
- Anveshana — Sanskrit "research/investigation." Accurate but generic.
- Paideia — Greek "formative learning." Beautiful but academic.
- Heureka — Greek "I have found it." Discovery-flavoured, lacks the process connotation.
- Sangam, Florilegium, Pazhuhesh, Bodhi — second-tier candidates from the original naming discussion.
